ABout me

Hi, I'm Laurie McDonald

Now living in Eugene, OR

The main thing I tell people when given a complement on my piano playing is that “I just love to play the piano!”. This is the passion I have tried to instill into all of my students over the past 30+ years of teaching.

I have always believed that God has gifted me with a unique ability to “hear” where the music is going, so the traditional methods that I use are enhanced by my own understanding of how to apply the use of chords and teach students how to cultivate their own “out of the box” approach to music.

I am a creator at heart and love to intertwine many art forms into my work.

Whether through the creative notebooks , song selections, themes, or recitals I try to offer visually stimulating material to inspire and complement the music itself.

I came to Mrs. Laurie as a four year old who spoke little English and yet, she believed in me and took me as her student. She was my teacher for fourteen years and always taught me the piano with such patience, care, intentionality, and professionalism. She always found ways to engage me- whether through examples, games, or new songs. She has cared for me as a person and a musician - I can confidently say that she is the best!

FAQ

Here’s everything you need to know before booking a lesson with Laurie.

Do I need a piano to take lessons?

Yes, a student needs a nice instrument to practice on at home.

Will a keyboard be ok?

A keyboard will work to get started but the higher the quality of instrument, the more interaction that occurs between the instrument and the student. This gives the student more of a desire to practice.

Does the keyboard need to be full size, 88 keys?

Preferably yes. Anything smaller is more like a toy than an actual instrument.

How do online lessons work?

I set my iPad up on a stand right next to my piano and make a FaceTime call to the student who has his iPad/laptop set up appropriately where I can see the student, his hands and piano keyboard.

What devices do I need to take online?

iPads or laptops work perfectly as long as you can connect through FaceTime. High speed internet will also allow us to have a clear connection

Can I take lessons in person?

Yes, if you live near Eugene, Oregon you may come to my home studio.

How do I pay for lessons?

Go to my website pianopizzazz studio.com and choose which package you prefer. From there you will be directed to my PayPal page where you will sign up for a monthly auto draft payment. Quick and easy. You do it once and don’t have to worry about every month.

What materials are needed to take lessons?

In addition to a piano, I will send digital music and request you to order music occasionally. The cost of music is very minimal.

What is a group lesson?

Several online students will connect with me together on a Zoom type call where everyone performs for each other from the comfort of their own home. We usually have an activity, a game and a drawing to make it fun and reward those who come. This allows students to prepare for in person performances.
